Andy Mansfield and America's Popular Music and Turn back The Clock

Thomas Whetston, AFRTS archivist writes about... America’s Popular Music a show broadcast out of Hollywood and hosted by Andy Mansfield. As the title suggested...and dictated...the program was an ensemble of dedications towards some of the big names of the early days. Count Basie, Artie Shaw, and others of their notoriety were reflected in schemes of swing. Andy Mansfield loved his oldies, but when you start doing an oldies show in the 1950s we hear big band and before. His first show was with his wife but always it was some of his favorites from his collection. Andy and Virginia Mansfield share some highlights of their record collection. Andy also did a great job with the oldies of the past decades in the 50s with a similar show "Turn Back the Clock" with his wife Virginia. America's Popular Music can be heard on our radio stream. Hear jazz DJ Bill Stewart on radiothen.network

William H. Stewart, (Bill Stewart) was a KLAC Los Angeles disc jockey in the 1960's. On his "Bill Stewart Show" he produced and announced more than 4,000 programs, many over AFRTS. When he was discharged from the army in November 1947 he continued his AFRTS programs while working on KLAC. His shows were heard on Armed Forces Radio Service for nearly 50 years. He died in 1993 at a Burbank hospital. He was 69. (LA Times notes) A longtime Burbank resident, Stewart died Feb. 26 of congestive heart failure and complications of diabetes, said his wife, Shirley. Stewart was born in New Brunswick, Canada. He served in the Canadian Air Force during World War II and was discharged due to a medical disability. He came to the United States and worked shortly at a radio station in Idaho until he was drafted into the U. S. Army. Many hours of his programs can be heard on our stream at www.radiothen.network. Chris Noel (born on July 2, 1941) is a radio DJ, and actress of the 1960s.

To Vietnam veterans, she needs no introduction, she was the one who came over to entertain the troops and ended up a "casualty" herself, sharing the daily risks of the servicemen on the field, and suffering the same ungrateful treatment back home. As the Armed Forces Network's first female DJ, she gained immediate popularity with the GI's through her program A Date With Chris, [and is credited with introducing the mini-skirt to the Far East].

The biggest names in Hollywood and Broadway recorded for AFRS during the war years, The American Forces Network can trace its origins back to May 26, 1942, when the War Department established the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). The U.S. Army began broadcasting from London during World War II, using equipment and studio facilities borrowed from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). In 1942 when the War Department established the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS).[6] A television service was first introduced in 1954 with a "pilot" station at Limestone Air Force Base, Maine. In 1954, the television mission of AFRS was officially recognized and AFRS (Armed Forces Radio Service) became AFRTS (Armed Forces Radio and Television Service). All of the Armed Forces broadcasting affiliates worldwide merged under the AFN banner on January 1, 1998. On November 21, 2000, the American Forces Information Service directed a change of the AFRTS organizational title from Armed Forces Radio and Television Service back to American Forces Radio and Television Service.
